Angela Rayner MP for Ashton-under-Lyne has chosen her 2015 Christmas card from more than 600 drawings submitted by local schoolchildren.
10-year-old Heman Solomon’s drawing of Santa’s sledge in the night sky above the constituency was chosen for the front of Angela’s official Christmas card for 2015.
Heman, a pupil at Higher Failsworth Primary School, will now see his design winging its way to the MP’s Parliamentary and Labour Party colleagues, constituents, family and friends.
Angela visited Higher Failsworth to present Heman Solomon with a framed copy of his winning design, a framed winner’s certificate – and a Christmas selection box!
Angela said: “This is my first ever Christmas card competition as the local MP and to get more than 600 entries from children at local schools is a phenomenal response.
“I am really overwhelmed at the time and effort all the children put into the contest - they were really up for it and some of the drawings sent in were really brilliant.
“But I could only pick one winner – and it had to be Heman. His Father Christmas with the sledge in the sky really tickled me. It was very special.”
Heman’s Year 6 teacher, Miss Francesca Lees said: “One of our teaching assistants first suggested the children enter the competition and they were all very excited about getting involved. It really took off.
“When we told Heman he had come first out of 600 entries, he was really over the moon – just like Santa in his card!”
There were three runners-up in the contest: Libby Johnson and Grace Borrell, both from Greenside Primary School, and Nazar Piwniuk, from Parochial C of E Primary School, whose designs will also appear on the card.
