Ban this puppy trade, says Angela

A CAMPAIGN to force anyone selling puppies in England to have an official licence is being backed by Angela Rayner, MP

This would mean:

  • Anyone selling a puppy must have a licence with welfare conditions attached
  • Strong penalties & fines for anyone caught selling a puppy without a licence.
  • A national database of puppy sellers to aid enforcement and give consumers greater confidence in puppies they are buying
  • All internet and offline advertisers (like Pets4Homes, PreLoved, Friday Ad) must display the licence number of the seller in order to list an advert. This has recently been adopted in France.

The campaign follows a huge rise in complaints received by the RSPCA about sick, under-age, and dying puppies being trafficked into and sold in the UK each year.

Angela said: "This increasing practice does significant harm to large numbers of young animals, and sees puppies treated as commodities, with no concern given to their welfare. These unlicensed sales are also likely to be costing the Exchequer huge sums in untaxed income.

"As a result we’re campaigning for the introduction of mandatory licensing for anyone selling puppies in England and improving the breeding of dogs.

"This vital change would help ensure that puppies have the best start to life, and would give local authorities the tools they need to act and improve protections for puppy buyers."
